MA Program (Tier 1)

PROGRAM ENDS JUNE 2012

VSI Master of Science Education Program (Tier 1) establishes a specific pathway to school leadership in science in a three-year curriculum leading to a Master of Arts in Science Education.

  • Courses in science content are held in two-week summer institutes with additional follow-up sessions held on weekends in the fall semester.
  • Pedagogical content courses are held on weekends on weekend sessions during the school year.
  • All courses feature the development of scientific inquiry, formative assessment, and teacher learning communities.
  • Teachers receive one on one mentoring at their school sites throughout the 3-year program.
  • Teachers carry out an independent research project under the direction of a research scientist, and an action research project focusing on an issue in their classroom or district.
  • Teacher leadership is an expectation and an outcome of the program with formal training in the second and third year.
